There is a cure for chronic diarrhea in AIDS patients called Provir made by a company named Shaman Pharmaceuticals. Approximately 40% of all AIDS deaths are caused by diarrhea, the other two major causes are malnutrition and wasting, which also involve diarrhea and so might be helped by Provir.

Provir is essentially effective about 90% of the time in the currently untreatable condition of chronic diarrhea in AIDS patients. In Phase II FDA trials, Provir showed about an 89% remission or improvement rate! Right now there is no alternative medical treatment other than Provir. In Phase III FDA trials to determine safety, Provir received a .033 P score (probability score). Although there are no strict standards for the P score, a score of .05 is usually a pass by the FDA. It is also safe by the FDA's own standard called the P value.

One would presume that due to the great need for Provir and the fact that there are no medical reasons for delay, the FDA would approve it quickly to end the inhumane suffering and dying from AIDS. However, the FDA has delayed it. I have been to a hospice. Anyone who has ever been to one would agree that this delay could not, and should not, have been made without grave reasons. Yet, the Phase II and Phase III testing of Provir do not provide any grave reasons to not pass the medication.

Until more facts are presented only one honest conclusion can be drawn. In my opinion this is a political move, whose consequences are more AIDS-related deaths. Shaman has said they can no longer afford to test Provir and have ceased working on the treatment. This is a great tragedy for all the suffering and death that Provir could have ended.
